FAREWELL EGON
Change of generations and
new vessel designs.
Wursata Shipping Corporation in 1982 acquired a Panamax bulk carrier
completed a little earlier by Burmeister & Wain of Copenhagen for Liberian
Interests and named her SEA SCOUT. One year later Egon Oldendorff ordered
a sistership for account of Rhenania Shipping Corporation, commissioned in
October 1984 as the MARINE RANGER. At the same time, Oldendorff took over
the newbuilding contract for a third sistership originally ordered by troubled
Wheelock Marden company, delivered on 30 June 1984 as the BALTIC MERMAID.
As the only vessel of this trio she is container fitted with an intake of 1,000 TEU
subject to the necessary lashing etc. equipment being on board. The ships’ lines
made possible the extraordinary low bunker consumpÂtion of about 37 tonnes
of heavy fuel per day at a speed of nearly 15 knots laden and 16 knots in ballast
which gave the three Danish-built ships an economical edge over identically
sized rivals. On her maiden voyage the MARINE RANGER sailed to Damman in
Saudi Arabia and then continued to Mormugao in India to load a cargo of ore
for Barcelona. Having disposed of its two supertankers in 1983, the Oldendorff
fleet again expanded by annually adding new ships.
