Newbuilding negotiations with
Hyundai, aided by amicable relations
between the two companies,
eventually resulted in Egon
Oldendorff ordering in early 1989
a series of four attractively priced
31,000 tdw, 2,100 TEU containerships,
in response to Senator Linie’s
requirements for additional tonnage
at favourable conditions. Acting as a
broker Egon Oldendorff undertook to
find buyers for three units, and the
building contracts were taken over
by Bernhard Schulte (AMERICAN
SENATOR), Peter Döhle Schiffahrts
KG (EUROPEAN SENATOR) and
Kommanditgesellschaft Projex
(ASIAN SENATOR). Delivered on
25 September 1991 the GERMAN
SENATOR was to have been an
Oldendorff ship, but whilst the ship
was being fitted out at the builders’
yard Oldendorff could not resist
the attractive proposition to sell
the ship to clients of Norddeutsche
Vermögensanlage GmbH of
Hamburg which appointed Reederei
Karl Schlüter of Rendsburg as
managing owners.
One year earlier Egon Oldendorff
had bought the containership MONTE
PASCOAL, completed in 1980 by Swan
Hunter-owned Walker Shipyard of
Newcastle as the DUNEDIN for British
account. The ship was lengthened
by inserting a 26 metres section at
Lübecker Flenderwerke increasing her
deadweight capacity to 23,990 tdw
and her container capacity to 1,400
TEU. The ship continued her time
