charter with Hamburg-Süd and,

When the charterers switched her

Egon Oldendorff (Asia) Ltd. was
established in Hong Kong in 1989, in
recognition of the importance of Far
East and South East Asian shipping
and shipbuilding. Ever since Hong
Kong joined the United Kingdom in
1814 as a Crown Colony the city kept
expanding in terms of population (in
excess of six million, thereof 250,000
foreigners) and of importance as a
port and a trading centre. Hong Kong
is one of the most important shipping
hubs and the domicile of a number
of well-known shipping companies.
Some 22,000 deepsea ships call at
Hong Kong per annum, plus 56,000
river and shortsea freighters.
Container throughput in 1996 will
exceed the ten million TEU mark,
rivalled only by Singapore. Thus,
Hong Kong was selected as the site
of Oldendorff’s first overseas
branch, managed initially by Richard
J. Churchman and later by Raoul
Noël. A part of the Oldendorff fleet
is being managed from Hong Kong
in a bid to be geographically closer
to Asian markets. After more than
five years in Hong Kong, the company
moved to Singapore at the end of
1995 and changed its name to
Oldendorff Asia (Pte.) Ltd.
